About

Hi there! I’m Alison Birkitt, a senior at Wheaton College double majoring in Film and New Media and Psychology. I’m super passionate about writing, storytelling, music, identity, and mental health. All of these aspects bring together the central question of my blog, which is how music affects identity and behavior, particularly in Gen Z individuals.

My Journey

I've had a passion for music from an early age and I started singing and performing at the age of four. I was heavily influenced by my parents who were in a band and wrote their own music. This gave me a love for storytelling and writing songs and poems of my own. I grew up listening to numerous artists who affected me spiritually and emotionally (and I still do!) Despite being surrounded by others who felt the same way, I always felt a heightened sensitivity when it came to certain songs and artists, and my feelings would constantly linger whether they were positive or negative. As a result of this sensitivity, I received several mental health and neurodevelopmental diagnoses as a teenager, including Major Depressive Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder. These diagnoses made me want to explore how certain music and other media can cause different emotions and allow for a sense of identity and belonging in my generation

As more music is constantly being released, there is much to discuss when it comes to an audience's perspective on certain songs. In the future, I am looking forward to expanding on this blog by including more artists, genres, and playlists that enhance various emotions, experiences, and perceptions.
